The British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar has become accustomed in recent times to a reputation as a trailblazer in the European crypto space – and such has proved to be the case again, with the news that Gibraltar will host an exhibition showcasing the digital works of leading artists.

As reported by The Olive Press and elsewhere, Gibraltar’s Xapo Bank will provide the setting for ‘Crypto Art Island’, which has been described as the first European art fair devoted to non-fungible tokens, or NFTs.

A combined physical and digital art platform, referred to as “phyigital”, will be used to show exclusively digital artworks over six days from 29th April to 4th May 2022.

Excitement over the pioneering art event

NFTs – which are non-interchangeable units of data stored on a blockchain – have been a major focus of digital and cultural innovation in recent years, their influence by no means being restricted to the art world.

Nonetheless, the ‘Crypto Art Island’ show looks set to draw attention to some of the world’s most exciting crypto and NFT artists, ranging from Javier Arrés and Marco Oggian to Gala Mirissa and even, as reported by The Olive Press, eight-year-old Dutchie Dinnage.

The British boy, who lives between the UK and Marbella, said to the expat newspaper: “I have been working on my art and NFTs after school, but not on Mondays because then I have to do my homework.

“When I create my crypto art, I show them to my mum and she is so proud of me. For me, it is so much fun to do and when a piece is finished I get so happy, because it excites me knowing that they will be on auction at the Crypto Art Island NFT exhibition. I can’t wait to meet all the other artists and visitors.”

The underpinning technology is no less fascinating than the art

With a press release confirming that art on show at the event will be auctioned on the NFT platform WISe.ART – courtesy of the global cybersecurity and blockchain company WISeKey International Holding Ltd – it’s fair to say that the exhibition will attract a lot of interest and comment extending beyond the artworks themselves.

It has been announced that the Xapo Bank – set within the solid limestone walls of the one-time British Army barracks in Gibraltar’s old town – will become an “incredible immersive viewing experience” for this very special exhibition.

Serving as the event’s official NFT Display Partner will be Tokenframe, which has designed extra-large, high-tech NFT screens on which the investment and collection pieces will be presented for sale.

It is certainly an event that looks set to be closely watched by many organisations providing AML crypto services – like our own – and the firms and entrepreneurs that take advantage of them.
